COLOR IS POWER

WORLD OF JUDITH
Judith Bradl

Judith Bradl (judithbradl.com; Instagram @judithbradl) is an Italian-raised, Vienna-based artist who believes in the power of maximalism and bold, colorful statement pieces. She embodies everything I mean when I say Color Maximalism. She spent years at the Kunsthistorisches Museum surrounded by centuries of masterworks, absorbing pigment and drama, and she carried it straight into her own bold, saturated statement style.

Her degree in art history from the University of Vienna shows up in every unique deliberation. The layering, the bold attitude, the sense that each color was picked on purpose and pushed as far as it could go. That combination of deep knowledge and total commitment to color is exactly what we celebrate at DomaChroma. When I first saw her work, my technicolor heart did a Viennese waltz. Same team, Judith, same team.

DomaChroma: What is your favorite color, and why?

Judith Bradl: I find it almost impossible to choose just one favorite color, because I’m drawn to color combinations rather than individual shades. I’m mainly fascinated by colors that create contrast, energy and emotion, such as a dramatic red or a powerful pink shade paired with a vibrant citrus yellow or a soft turquoise combined with an emerald green shade.

DC: When did maximalism and bold color become your artistic philosophy?

JB: It all happened very naturally. As a child, I loved playing dressup with colorful clothes. Later, I went through a phase where I embraced a very black and white minimalist style, which never truly felt like me. Over time, I realized that I was happiest and most creative when I was surrounded by colors. Returning to my colorful roots felt like rediscovering a part of myself that has always been there.

DC: You grew up surrounded by art in Italy, studied Art History in Vienna, and worked at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. How are the old masters represented or referenced in your style choices?

JB: Art has always played a very special role in my life and remains my greatest source of inspiration. What I admire most about the old masters is their powerful use of color. Their paintings were never just decorative. Color was used intentionally to create atmosphere, evoke emotions and tell stories. That’s something I try to bring into my own work and personal style too. Whether through unexpected color combinations, vivid contrasts or expressive accessories, I aim to create looks that feel visually rich and emotionally engaging. In many ways my approach to style is influenced by the same idea: using color not just as an aesthetic choice but as a tool for Expression.

DC: Please walk us through how a Judith Brandl look is created, from idea to full execution.

JB: Every look starts with a vision. I first think about the location, the occasion and the mood I want to create. Once I have that picture in mind, I start experimenting with different outfit options, usually beginning with the clothing itself. The final and most important step is adding accessories. That’s where the real magic happens for me. I’m convinced that a bold hat, a pair of funky sunglasses, or an unexpected necklace can completely transform an outfit and add a touch of personality.

DC: What does maximalism let you communicate that minimalism won’t?

JB: To me, maximalism is all about expressing my individuality, without any limitations. It allows me to communicate who I am and how I see the world in a very personal way. I feel like minimalism encourages people to ‘blindly’ follow trends or rules that don’t even reflect their true personality. Maximalism, on the other hand, gives us freedom to embrace everything that makes us unique and lets us be ourselves in a way that feels honest, expressive, and completely unfiltered.

DC: How would you describe the feeling of being dressed in a bold vivid style that you’ve created?

JB: It feels incredibly empowering and self-expressive, allowing me to show my personality without saying a word. For me, being bold is all about wearing what brings you the most joy and inspiring others to do the same.
