I found @andrea.colorful.style. on Instagram, and I instantly followed her brilliant, clear, and world renowned color combination styling. Her work inspires color confidence and self expression. Andrea Popescu is a color-loving stylist who inspires feel-good dressing. Bold combinations and creative freedom are her love language. She is a content creator, a fashion blogger, and most important, a color specialist. And, as I found out, there’s so much more to discover about Andrea.

DC: What is your favorite color, and why?

AP: As someone who has been dressing colorfully for the past four years, I have two favorite colors: green and pink. Each holds a different story for me. I love green because of its variety – being the color with the most shades on the spectrum, it can ground an outfit or make it pop. I especially love chartreuse, olive, and lime green. Pink instantly brightens any outfit. Its soft shades create femininity; its vibrant shades create boldness. Such fantastic colors! And together? They create the perfect color combination!

DC: Please tell us about ColorStyle, your clients, local and global brands you favor, and what you love about what you do?

AP: ColorfulStyle is my platform for teaching color architecture to a community of 100K+ followers on Instagram. I build color systems and create educational content that helps women understand how to dress for joy through intentional color choices.

I collaborate with brands like Snag Tights, where I curated my own colorful tights bundle, and work with brands that share my anti-beige, pro-joy philosophy.

What do I love most? Seeing my community embrace bold color combinations that they never thought they could wear. When someone messages me that they wore chartreuse + pink for the first time because of my content, that’s the impact I’m here for.

DC: Your IG audience is very strong – over 100,000 followers, with more following every day! Why do you think your bold color combinations and looks resonate with your online community?

AP: I think my content resonates because I teach color architecture, not just inspiration. My community is done with beige minimalism. They crave bold color but need the HOW (which shades work together, why they work, how to wear them). I show them exactly that with real outfits and Pantone swatches they can reference. My philosophy is simple: we’re dressing to feel something, not just to be seen. When you understand color, getting dressed becomes joy.

DC: What do you love about color maximalism and the style that you’ve created?

AP: Color maximalism is freedom. It’s rejecting the idea that we should dress small or safe. Every bold combination I try (like chartreuse + red, pink + olive, yellow + lime) has structure and purpose. I like to think I build color systems, not just outfits. And honestly? That’s what it’s all about: waking up and choosing JOY through color every single day.

DC: Your personal style is a boldly colorful aesthetic – you knock it out of the park with every single look. How much of your style is color theory, how much is instinct, and how much is your love of bold bright color?

AP: As a mathematician, I think of this in terms of proportions. If 100% represents my colorful aesthetic, then 25% is color theory – the theoretical foundation. Understanding the color wheel, complementary colors, and monochrome combinations. 25% is instinct – my gut sometimes pairs colors in the most unexpected ways, and those combinations end up being the most powerful. 50% is pure love for bold, bright color – I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t genuinely love it.

DC: How do you put a look together?

AP: I have two approaches: color-first or piece-first.

Color-first: I start with a combination I want to explore (like chartreuse + lavender), then pull pieces from my wardrobe in those shades to create instant cohesion.

Piece-first: I start with one bold item I love – maybe a sequin skirt or a statement coat – then build colors around it that support and elevate it. This is more intuitive, like visual storytelling.

Both approaches work, depending on my mood and what I want to express that day.

DC: Are there any other parts of your life that are full-blown color?

AP: Absolutely! Color is my entire life, not just my wardrobe.

My apartment is a colorful place. My yellow kitchen gives me instant sunshine every morning. My living room is pure whimsy, full of playful, colorful pieces that spark joy.

My wedding was a full-blown color celebration! I chose dopamine-inspired decor because why should the most important day be neutral? Life is too short for that.

I’m drawn to colorful destinations – Italy’s Cinque Terre, Paris’s painted doors, Spain’s vibrant streets.

Color isn’t a style choice for me, it’s a lifestyle.

DC: What advice do you have for those who are just starting their vivid color journey?

AP: Start where I started: pick one color combination you’re drawn to and commit to it for at least 2-3 times. Wear it in different ways: bold, subtle, with accessories, head-to-toe. This teaches you how versatile color actually is. Don’t add random bright pieces and hope they work. Instead, learn basic color theory (complementary pairs, tonal combinations, triadic harmonies).

My practical tips:

– Use Pantone references or color wheels
– Start with two colors, add a third when comfortable
– Photograph your outfits to see what works
– Ignore rules about “flattering” colors – joy matters more

The goal isn’t perfection. When you understand color, you dress with purpose and thus with joy.

Thank you, Andrea, for an insightful look into your colorful and dynamic world!
